An acrylic wall system is a panel-based wall covering designed specifically for wet areas. Instead of tile set in grout, acrylic panels interlock at seams and edges and are bonded to the wall surface with adhesive and waterproof sealant. The result is a continuous, grout-free surface that water cannot penetrate at the seams and that cleans in a fraction of the time a tiled surround requires.

ThriveStar Remodeling installs acrylic wall systems throughout Colorado Springs for tub surrounds, shower surrounds, and wet wall applications. This is one of the services where material quality and installation precision matter as much as the product itself. Panels that are not cut cleanly, corners that are not sealed properly, or adhesive applied to a substrate that has not been adequately prepared will all cause problems over time. We handle the substrate assessment, preparation, and installation as a complete package.

What Acrylic Wall Systems Are and How They Work

The Panel System

Acrylic wall systems consist of rigid acrylic or composite panels, typically in widths sized to cover standard tub alcove dimensions with minimal seams. Most systems include dedicated corner pieces and trim profiles that cap the edges cleanly at the tub-to-wall joint and at any exposed panel edges. The panels are cut to height on site and installed using a construction adhesive and waterproof perimeter sealant.

Because the panels are non-porous, water that hits the surface runs off rather than being absorbed. Mildew has nothing to anchor to on a smooth, sealed acrylic surface the way it does in the texture of grout lines. This is the primary functional advantage over tile for homeowners who find grout maintenance to be an ongoing burden.

Where They Are Installed

Acrylic wall systems are used most commonly in three-wall alcove tub surrounds, replacing tile or previous panel installations. They are also appropriate for shower surrounds, particularly in configurations where the homeowner prefers a clean, low-maintenance surface over custom tile. For shower installations, the panel system needs to be compatible with the shower configuration and fixture layout, which we confirm during the estimate.

We also install acrylic wall panels on wet walls adjacent to tubs and in utility bathroom applications where tile is not required but moisture resistance is.

Acrylic Wall Panels vs. Tile

This is the comparison most homeowners are weighing when they consider an acrylic wall system. Both are legitimate options. The right choice depends on what the homeowner prioritizes.

Maintenance

Tile surrounds require regular grout cleaning, periodic resealing, and eventual regrout or recaulk when grout begins to crack or discolor. The tub-to-wall joint in a tiled surround needs particular attention because movement at that joint causes grout to crack over time, requiring caulk maintenance. Acrylic wall panels have no grout lines to maintain. A wipe-down with a soft cloth and standard bathroom cleaner is all routine cleaning requires.

Design Flexibility

Tile offers significantly more design flexibility: size, color, layout pattern, material type, and texture can all be customized. A tiled surround can be a design feature. Acrylic panels come in a more limited range of colors and finishes, typically stone-look, solid color, and a few textured options depending on the product line. They look clean and contemporary but cannot replicate the design range of custom tile work. If design customization is the priority, see our custom tile page.

Installation Time

An acrylic wall system installs faster than a tiled surround. There is no tile setting, no grout cure time, and no final seal to wait for. Most acrylic surround installations complete in one to two days once the existing surround is removed and the substrate is prepared. A tiled surround of similar size typically takes three to five days as a standalone project.

Longevity

A quality acrylic wall system properly installed on a sound substrate will last 20 years or more with routine care. Tile installed correctly with proper waterproofing behind it can outlast acrylic in terms of raw material durability, but tile performance in practice is heavily dependent on ongoing grout maintenance. Acrylic panels that are installed well and cleaned with appropriate products hold up consistently without maintenance demands.

Installation Process

The installation sequence matters as much as the product. Here is how we approach it.

We start by removing the existing surround down to the substrate. This is not optional. Installing panels over existing tile adds thickness, creates edge conflicts at fixtures and the tub rim, and covers any substrate or moisture problems that need to be addressed before new material goes up. Once the old material is out, we inspect the substrate and framing for any water damage or deterioration and repair it before proceeding.

The substrate is then prepared to accept the panel adhesive. Panels are measured and cut to fit the alcove height and width with clean edges. Corner pieces and trim profiles are dry-fit before adhesive is applied. Adhesive goes on the substrate in the specified pattern for the panel product, panels are set and pressed into place, and corner and perimeter seams are sealed with waterproof sealant. Fixture cutouts for the faucet, spout, and showerhead are made precisely during the panel cutting stage.

The sealant needs cure time before the tub or shower is used, typically 24 to 48 hours. We walk through the completed installation with you before we leave.

Acrylic Wall System FAQs

In some cases, yes, but it is not our standard approach. Installing over existing tile adds thickness that can conflict with fixture trim, the tub rim lip, and edge trim profiles. It also covers any substrate issues that should be assessed and repaired. A full removal and clean substrate installation gives a better, longer-lasting result. We assess this during the estimate and give you a clear recommendation.

A properly installed acrylic wall system on a sound substrate typically lasts 20 years or more with routine maintenance. Avoiding abrasive cleaners and using soft cloths rather than scrubbing pads preserves the surface finish over time.

The panel material itself is non-porous and waterproof. The seams between panels and at the perimeter are sealed with waterproof sealant. The installation is only as waterproof as the quality of the sealing work, which is why proper corner sealing and tub-to-panel joint treatment are critical steps we do not cut short.

Yes. Acrylic wall systems are appropriate for shower surrounds, wet walls, and tub alcoves. For shower applications the panel product and configuration need to be compatible with the shower layout and fixture locations. See our acrylic showers page for more on acrylic in shower applications specifically.

Cost depends on the size of the installation, the panel product selected, and whether substrate repair is needed after the existing surround is removed. ThriveStar Remodeling provides free, itemized estimates before any work begins. Request yours here.
