Before any tub goes in, the subfloor and surrounding framing need to be assessed for condition. Soft spots, rot, or deterioration in the subfloor under the tub area mean the tub will not have adequate support and will flex under load. This is especially common in older Colorado Springs homes where a previous tub leak went unaddressed for years. We inspect and repair subfloor and framing issues before the new tub is set. Skipping this step and setting a tub into a compromised subfloor is a short-term approach that creates an expensive problem later.
A bathtub must be level from side to side and front to back before it is secured. Standard mortar bed or adjustable leveling feet, depending on the tub type, are used to achieve a stable, level installation. An alcove tub has a nailing flange along the two side walls and the back wall. This flange gets secured to the framing studs before the surround walls are closed. This is the only opportunity to secure the tub properly. Once the surround is up, the flange is inaccessible. A tub that is set and tiled around without being secured to the framing will move, which stresses the plumbing, cracks the tub-to-wall caulk joint repeatedly, and eventually damages the surround.
For freestanding and drop-in configurations, the securing method differs but the principle is the same: the tub needs to be stable and properly anchored before finishing work proceeds.
The drain assembly connects the tub basin to the drain line in the floor. The overflow assembly handles the water control and connects to the same drain line higher on the tub wall. Both need to be connected with proper fittings and sealed correctly. Improper drain assembly connection is one of the most common sources of slow leaks under a tub that go unnoticed until there is visible damage to the subfloor or ceiling below.

Whether that is a tile build or an acrylic wall system, the tub-to-wall joint at the bottom of the surround is a critical seal point. Grouting this joint is a common installation error that results in cracking and water infiltration at the base of the surround within a short period.
