The installation process follows a consistent sequence regardless of tub size or configuration.
We begin by assessing the existing tub thoroughly before any commitment to install. We check for structural cracks through the tub base, soft spots in the floor of the tub indicating delamination or damage, and any evidence of moisture infiltration at the drain assembly or overflow. If any of these issues are present, a liner is not appropriate and we will tell you so directly. The correct solution in those cases is bathtub replacement, not a liner installed over a compromised tub.
If the tub is a good candidate, we measure for the custom liner. Acrylic liners are manufactured to fit specific tub dimensions, so the fit depends on accurate measurement. Once the liner arrives, installation proceeds as follows: the existing tub surface is thoroughly cleaned and prepped, the adhesive is applied to the contact points, the liner is set into position and pressed firmly into place, and the perimeter seams and drain connection are sealed with waterproof sealant. Hardware including drain trim and overflow cover are installed to complete the assembly.
The tub should not be used for 24 hours after installation to allow the adhesive and sealant to fully cure. After that, the surface is ready for normal use.
Acrylic is lower maintenance than most original tub surfaces, but there are a few things that extend the life of the installation significantly.
Avoid abrasive scrubbing pads and powder cleansers. These scratch the acrylic surface and dull the finish over time, creating microscopic scratches where soap scum can accumulate. Liquid bathroom cleaners and soft cloths or sponges are appropriate for routine cleaning. Avoid leaving standing water with high mineral content sitting in the tub for extended periods, which can cause mineral staining at the waterline over time. Do not use acetone, paint thinner, or solvent-based products on the liner surface.
With routine care, a quality acrylic liner on a structurally sound tub will last 10 to 15 years or more.
