A tiled bath surround gives more design flexibility: size, layout, color, pattern, and material can all be customized to the homeowner's preference. Subway tile, large-format porcelain, natural stone, and mosaic are all viable options. The trade-off relative to a panel system is that tile requires ongoing grout maintenance and is a longer installation due to waterproofing, setting, grouting, and cure time.

This is the part most homeowners do not think about, and the part that matters most for long-term performance.
A bath surround is only as good as the substrate and waterproofing system behind it. Old surrounds are frequently removed to reveal deteriorated drywall, rotted framing, or active mold growth behind them, particularly in homes where the previous surround had failing grout or caulk that let water infiltrate over time.
When we remove an existing surround, we inspect everything behind it before new material goes up. If there is damage, we repair it at that stage. Installing a new surround over a damaged substrate with compromised framing simply delays a more expensive repair down the road.
This also means we do not recommend installing panel systems directly over existing tile unless the existing tile is confirmed to be fully adhered, the substrate behind it is sound, and the layer build-up does not create edge or hardware conflicts. In most cases, a clean removal and proper rebuild is the better approach.
Some signs that it is time to address the surround rather than keep cleaning and recaulking:
Grout that is cracking, crumbling, or discoloring despite cleaning is a sign that the grout is failing and water infiltration is likely. Caulk that separates repeatedly at the tub-to-wall joint and requires constant re-application is doing the same. Tiles that are loose, hollow-sounding when tapped, or have visibly separated from the wall indicate adhesion failure and possible moisture behind the wall. A soft or spongy feel in the wall surface adjacent to the tub is a sign of water damage in the substrate or framing.
Any of these warrant an assessment. If the surround is at the point where maintenance is constant and the results are temporary, replacement is more cost-effective than continued patching. We assess this during the free estimate and give you a straightforward recommendation.
An acrylic or composite panel surround can typically be installed in one to two days once the existing surround is removed and the substrate is confirmed to be sound. A tiled surround takes longer due to waterproofing cure time, tile setting, grouting, and final sealant, generally three to five days as a standalone project. If the surround is part of a broader bath remodel, the full timeline extends accordingly.
In some cases, yes. It requires that the existing tile is fully adhered with no hollow spots, that the substrate behind it is sound, and that the added thickness does not create conflicts at fixtures, edges, or the tub-to-wall joint. We assess these factors during the estimate. In most cases a full removal and rebuild gives a better, longer-lasting result.
Ongoing grout cracking in a tub surround is almost always caused by movement. The tub flexes slightly under the weight of water and a person bathing, and that movement transfers to the surround walls at the connection point. Over time this breaks the grout. Proper construction separates the tub-to-wall joint with a flexible sealant rather than grout, which accommodates movement without cracking. If the joint was grouted rather than caulked, recurrence is likely until the joint is rebuilt correctly.
