blue bathroom remodeling colorado springs by ThriveStar Renvoations

When a bathtub is cracked through, stained beyond cleaning, the wrong size for the space, or simply at the end of its useful life, replacement is the right call. Replacement fixes the tub itself, not just its surface.

ThriveStar Remodeling handles bathtub replacement throughout Colorado Springs. We remove the existing tub, assess the plumbing and substrate, install the new tub with proper connections and waterproofing, and finish the surround so the whole area looks cohesive when we are done. The owner manages every project personally with a licensed, insured team under one contract.

Bathtub Configurations We Install

Not every tub fits every bathroom, and not every homeowner wants the same thing from a new tub. Here are the main configuration types and what each one involves:

Alcove Bathtubs

An alcove tub fits into a three-wall enclosure and is the most common residential configuration. If your existing tub is an alcove, replacing it with another alcove tub is the most straightforward swap: remove the old unit, inspect the framing and plumbing, set the new tub, and finish the surround. Standard alcove tubs run 60 inches long, though 54-inch and 66-inch options exist for smaller or larger spaces.

Freestanding Bathtubs

A freestanding tub sits away from the walls on its own base or feet. Converting from an alcove to a freestanding configuration requires relocating the drain and supply lines and finishing the walls where the old surround was. It is a more involved project but a popular choice for homeowners doing a master bathroom upgrade. We handle the full plumbing and finish scope.

Drop-In Bathtubs

A drop-in tub is set into a deck or platform built around it, with only the rim visible above the deck surface. This configuration requires building a deck structure that coordinates with the tub dimensions, tile work on the deck surface, and proper waterproofing underneath. We build the full assembly, not just set the tub.

Soaking Tubs

Soaking tubs are deeper than standard alcove tubs, designed for full-body submersion. They are available in alcove, freestanding, and drop-in configurations. The deeper basin means more water volume, which may warrant a review of the water heater capacity before installation.

Walk-In Bathtubs

A walk-in tub has a door entry built into the side, allowing someone to step in without climbing over the tub wall. This is primarily an accessibility modification rather than a style choice. See our walk-in bathtub page for detail on what that installation involves.

What the Replacement Process Involves

Bathtub replacement is not just pulling one tub out and sliding another in. The work that happens in between is what determines whether the installation holds up over time.

We start by removing the existing tub and surround material down to the framing. This exposes the plumbing, drain assembly, and subfloor so we can assess what condition everything is in before the new tub goes in. If there is water damage, mold, or deteriorated subfloor material from a slow leak, we address it at this stage. Skipping this inspection and setting a new tub into a compromised substrate is one of the more common mistakes in tub replacement work.

Once the framing and plumbing are confirmed to be in good condition, we set the new tub, connect the drain and supply lines, and verify everything functions properly before moving to the surround. The surround is then built back with proper cement board substrate and waterproofing, followed by the tile you choose. Fixtures are installed last.

If the replacement involves any plumbing changes, such as relocating the drain for a freestanding tub or upgrading the supply lines, we manage licensed plumbers under our general contracting model.

Your New Tub Surround

The tub surround gets addressed as part of every replacement because removing the old tub always requires disturbing the surrounding material. We rebuild it in custom tile: we waterproof the substrate and install porcelain, ceramic, stone, or mosaic tile in whatever layout you choose. See our custom tile page for detail on tile types and patterns.

If you want the tub replacement to be part of a broader bath or bathroom remodel covering vanity, flooring, and fixtures, that falls under our bath remodel or full bathroom remodeling scope.

Not Sure Your Tub Needs Replacing?

If the existing tub is structurally sound, with no cracks through the base or soft spots in the floor, you may not need a new one. We will tell you honestly during the free in-home estimate whether replacement makes sense for your situation. Thinking about a walk-in shower instead? See our tub-to-shower conversion page.

Bathtub Replacement FAQs

A straightforward alcove tub swap with surround update typically takes two to four days once work begins. Projects involving plumbing relocation, freestanding tub conversion, or a broader bath remodel run longer. We give you a specific timeline during the estimate.

Cost depends on the tub style, any plumbing work required, and the surround finish you choose. An alcove swap with a tile surround costs less than a freestanding conversion with plumbing relocation and custom tile deck work. Yes. Once the existing tub is removed, we inspect the framing, subfloor, and plumbing before the new tub goes in. If there is water damage or deterioration, we address it at that stage. Setting a new tub into a compromised substrate without repair is a common source of future problems.

Yes. We can install a tub the homeowner has already sourced, provided it is appropriate for the space and plumbing configuration. We will confirm compatibility during the estimate before scheduling the project.

A like-for-like tub swap in the same location with no plumbing changes typically does not require a permit. Projects involving drain relocation, supply line changes, or structural modifications do require permits. As a licensed general contractor, ThriveStar Remodeling handles all permit applications and inspections when they are required.

Financing provided by third-party lenders through Momnt, subject to credit approval; not all applicants qualify. Payment examples are estimates only and assume the stated amount financed at 8.99% APR for 120 months. Rates range from 5.99%–17.99% APR based on creditworthiness; your actual rate, term, and payment may vary. "No interest if paid in full within 12 months" is a deferred-interest offer: interest accrues from the purchase date and is charged retroactively on the full balance if it isn't paid in full within 12 months. Prequalification uses a soft credit inquiry that does not affect your credit score; a full application may involve a hard inquiry.
